Housing for people, not for profit
River City Housing Collective is a not-for-profit cooperative that provides affordable housing to the Iowa City area. Unlike dorms or apartments owned by a landlord, the members control the way in which co-ops operate.
Our members live in one of three historic houses, just a short walk from
downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus. The houses are managed and operated through the efforts of members and each house reflects the values and lifestyle choices of it
s residents. The people who live in RCHC also enjoy the community, affordability, and convenience not found in apartments or dorms.

Website updates! posted by ctiwari on Tue Nov 21, 2006 7:59 pm (GMT -6)
Hi All
I've been working giving the RCHC website a new look. An updated website can be accessed at...
http://www.river-city-housing.org/v2
The website runs on a pretty sophisticated 'Content Management System' called Mambo. I've customized the site to fit some of our needs. Among other features, the new site includes...
1. Ability to post Blogs
2. An online calendar
3. File storage area
4. Personal pages for RCHC members
5. Online gallery (coming soon!)
There are other things that can be added such as... polls, contact lists, etc. If there is something specific that you'd like to have on this site, please let me know!
You will need to login to access the all areas on this website. A temp account (username: demo; password: demo) has been setup. Please note that there are some restrictions on this account. With a personal account (you can create one if you wish to do so!), you will be able to publish content freely.
Anyway, please experiment with this new website and email any comments/suggestions to me at chetan.tiwari@gmail.com.
Thanks!!

RCHC swag for sale! posted by dylan on Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:27 pm (GMT -6)
We made a T-shirt design a few years ago, and there is a silkscreen for it somewhere at Summit House. We did some printing at one of the open houses, and it was a blast, and free if you provide a shirt or other textiles. But if you don't feel like getting your hands inky, I uploaded the design to CafePress. You can now buy our stuff here. Feel free to let me know if you'd like other items, or different colors, etc.

Field To Family Feast at Scattergood posted by gypsy on Tue Sep 19, 2006 6:18 am (GMT -6)
This from Mark Quee from Scattergood Farm. Two of our houses buy food from the farm, and we get tasty treats from May through October.
So, again, an appeal and invitation to come on out to Scattergood this
Sunday. The Field to Family Festival begins Thursday with lots of fun
events and it all culminates at our place at noon on Sunday. We took in
to the locker two lambs this morning, which will be spit roasted for
the big event. Tomorrow we'll harvest sweet potatoes, and there'll be
plenty of other yummy things from the garden. It's billed as a potluck
(mostly to maintain consistency among the three farm-based events), but
you really don't need to bring anything. There will be tours of the
campus, the farm and the prairie and opportunities to meet other people
committed to buying locally. An RSVP isn't required, but feel free to let
me know if you have any questions. We'd really love to see many of you
here. Again, here is the website: http://www.fieldtofamily.org/
<http://www.fieldtofamily.org/> We'll be meeting and eating at the
school, not the farm.

Thanks to Richard and Marilyn Keslerwest for their donation to Anomy house to go towards recovery efforts! We are appreciative of all the former members and friends of RCHC who have come forward to wish us well, help with the clean up or who've donated to the cause.
Keep us in your thoughts!

Donations posted by burgess on Mon May 01, 2006 10:05 am (GMT -6)
The love keeps coming! To help us reconstruct after the tornado, my friend and co-worker Vernita Morgan has given RCHC a very generous donation of $25.00. This is after NASCO, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and numerous other friends of RCHC have donated us their time and materials over the last few weeks.
Let's brainstorm ways we can show our appreciation for the generosity that people have shown RCHC. Thanks again, Vernita!

Torndao hits Iowa City! posted by Lisa-Ann on Sat Apr 15, 2006 3:27 pm (GMT -6)
As most people know- a tornado hit Iowa City on Thursday night. Everyone at all three locations has been accounted for (including pets) and everyone is doing fine.
Anomy House, located at 802 E. Washington was in the direct path of the storm and had a lot of damage done to the house. The structure itself seems to be secure but most of the windows are destroyed and the roof has some serious shingle damage.
Though the storm was devastating and the aftermath looked unmanageable- our co-op members rallied together and took charge. Working all day on Friday, we were able to clear out most of the glass, get a roofing company in to secure things up top, we chopped up and hauled our downed trees and cleaned up the debris. Working that day with fellow members, I was reminded how fortunate we are all to be a part of RCHC and that we are all committed to helping this community not only survive during tough times but to also thrive.
The worst is over but members at Anomy are still without electricity or gas. Members at Bloom County as still without electricity.
For pictures of the storm, see the following link:

Meet and Greet posted by Lisa-Ann on Thu Apr 06, 2006 5:28 pm (GMT -6)
Hey all! Come and meet folks from the Madison Coop's. CJ Carter is part of the maintenance and Gabriel Heck is part of member services and both of them will be arriving on Friday, April 14th around 5pm and staying with us until Sunday, April 16th. This is a good opportunity to learn more about how other coop's are run and to recieve some fresh perspectives on some issues we are having. Please come and introduce yourselves to these guests and help show off RCHC. We're tiny but we've got might (or is that bite?)
Also, check out their website: http://www.madisoncommunity.coop/index.cfm
Thanks, Lisa-Ann

Open House went well posted by amy on Sun Apr 02, 2006 9:53 am (GMT -6)
Thanks to everyone who helped with, and everyone who attended, this year's open house event. It was quite pleasant, with delicious food, skill shares and music. Several people attended because they might be interested in living in a co-op, which is excellent. Yay!

The RCHC annual Halloween party at Anomy house will be this Saturday night, Oct. 29, 8 pm-2 am. The theme? Good old spooky Halloween. A few folks are going to do a zombie schtick, and David Morris will DJ, along with some other volunteer DJs. Good times, great oldies. See you there!
